The programme provides research-led teaching in fundamental cancer biology, clinical oncology and the latest advances in modern therapeutics including immunotherapy and precision medicine. In addition, the six-month full-time research project is excellent preparation for a PhD and a career in healthcare or the pharmaceutical industry.
In this course you will explore how research in the lab leads to real world advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment.
You鈥檒l study the fundamental biology of cancer, including how normal cells become cancerous, how tumours grow and spread, and how the tumour microenvironment and immune system can be targeted with modern therapies like immunotherapy and precision medicine. You鈥檒l gain a deep understanding of both the science and the clinical side of oncology, learning from researchers, clinicians, and even cancer survivors.
You鈥檒l examine the full journey from identifying a drug target to clinical trials and personalised treatment, and choose optional modules in either bioinformatics or in vivo experimentation to shape the course around your interests.
A major highlight of the degree is the six month, full time research project, where you鈥檒l work within one of our internationally recognised research teams to apply your knowledge, develop practical skills, and prepare for careers in research, biotech, or further study.
You鈥檒l also explore the wider context of cancer through epidemiology, public health, and global disease patterns. Taught within the School of Medicine and Population Health, you鈥檒l benefit from expert teaching, a supportive academic environment, and access to seminars from global leaders in cancer research. This course will equip you with the insight, experience and confidence to contribute to the future of cancer science and make a real impact in the field.
