Women and Children鈥檚 Health research in Liverpool has an international reputation for excellence. The Department of Women鈥檚 and Children鈥檚 Health (http://www.liv.ac.uk/obchildhe/) incorporates obstetrics, gynaecology, neonatology and medical and surgical paediatrics.
The Department offers some of the most extensive facilities for research in this area in Europe, providing excellent bases for patient-orientated translational and clinical research. Expertise in Women鈥檚 Health is based in Liverpool Women鈥檚 Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; expertise in Children鈥檚 Health is based in purpose built accommodation at the Royal Liverpool Children鈥檚 Hospital at Alder Hey. Liverpool Women鈥檚 Hospital and Alder Hey Children鈥檚 Hospital are respectively the largest women鈥檚 and children鈥檚 hospitals in Europe. The Department return was designated as 鈥渃ommended鈥 by the 鈥渙ther hospital based clinical specialties鈥 sub-panel of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.
Subject OverviewThe Department鈥檚 strong programme of translational research is supported by collaborations with Biological Sciences, the Department of Physiology and close links with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the Liverpool Wellcome Tropical Centre in Blantyre, Malawi. In the last decade, the Department has received around 拢32 million in external research grants.
