About French, MA (Hons) - at University of Glasgow

French involves the study of a key European and international language and its culture.

What will I study?

At all levels of study you will have the opportunity to advance in your understanding and use of the language, both written and oral, and will study current French culture and civilisation and that of previous centuries.

If you have not studied French before, you will be catered for in a class specially designed for beginners and near-beginners with an emphasis on intensive language acquisition. A good performance in the beginners鈥� course allows you to continue with French in second year and potentially on to Honours level.

If you progress to Honours you are usually required to spend a year鈥檚 residence abroad (an additional year before entering Junior Honours). Thereafter the Honours course (years four and five) offers a significant degree of choice including literature, cinema, cultural and postcolonial studies, recent history and politics and modern thought.

How will I learn?

Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, small group tutorials and seminars.

Special features

• Excellent audio-visual and IT facilities are available to support both the language and the wider cultural aspects of the course and emphasis in teaching is given to the development of both oral and written skills.


• At all levels, elements of tuition are given by native language speakers of French.
